Två år senare, 1970, släpptes fortsättningen på Planet of the Apes. Efter det att Taylor och hans besättning försvann så är det här berättelsen om den räddningsexpedition som skickades ut för att hitta honom. Filmen tar ett djupare kliv ner i apornas egna interna och sociala stridigheter som man kunde skymta i den första filmen. Aporna är updelade i tre fraktioner, Gorillorna som står för den militära delen, schimpanserna som står för den forskande delen, och orangutangerna som står för den religiösa. Gorillorna vet att människorna finns i den del av landet som kallas ”The Forbidden Zone” och det är dit deras korståg skall gå för att utrota människan. ”The only good human, is a dead human!”.
